Hypothyroidism: Signs You Might Be Missing

Feeling tired, gaining weight, or struggling with brain fog? These could be signs of an underactive thyroid. Here's what to look for and when to seek specialist care.

Hypothyroidism — an underactive thyroid — is one of the most commonly under-diagnosed endocrine conditions. The thyroid gland, located at the front of the neck, produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy, mood and many other vital functions. When it produces too little hormone, the effects can be wide-ranging and easy to attribute to other causes.

The classic symptoms include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight gain, feeling cold even in warm weather, constipation, dry skin and hair, and a slowed heart rate. Many patients also experience depression, poor concentration and memory problems — symptoms that are frequently attributed to stress or ageing.

Women are significantly more likely to develop hypothyroidism than men, and the risk increases with age. Autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) is the most common cause, where the body's immune system gradually destroys thyroid tissue.

Diagnosis is straightforward with a simple blood test measuring TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and thyroid hormone levels. Treatment with levothyroxine — a synthetic thyroid hormone — is highly effective when dosed correctly. At EndoMedics, we take care to optimise your thyroid levels individually, rather than simply targeting a 'normal range'.

If you recognise these symptoms in yourself, don't dismiss them as simply being tired or stressed. A thyroid function test is quick, inexpensive and could explain a great deal. Book a consultation with our specialist today.
