Osteoporosis: The Silent Bone Thief

Bone health and osteoporosis prevention

Osteoporosis causes no pain until a bone breaks. By then, significant bone loss has already occurred. Here's why early assessment matters and what you can do to protect your bones.

Osteoporosis is often called the 'silent disease' because bone loss occurs without any symptoms — until a fracture happens. By the time a person breaks a wrist from a minor fall, or discovers a vertebral fracture from back pain, they may have already lost a significant proportion of their bone density.

The condition is closely linked to hormonal changes. In women, the sharp decline in oestrogen after menopause accelerates bone loss dramatically. In men, declining testosterone with age has a similar, though more gradual, effect. Other endocrine conditions — including hyperparathyroidism, hyperthyroidism and Cushing's syndrome — can also cause secondary osteoporosis.

Risk factors include a family history of osteoporosis, low body weight, smoking, excessive alcohol, prolonged steroid use, and a diet low in calcium and vitamin D. Women who have had early menopause or have a history of amenorrhoea are also at higher risk.

At EndoMedics, we assess bone health comprehensively — including DEXA bone density scanning, hormonal evaluation, and calcium and vitamin D status. Treatment may include supplementation, lifestyle modification, and where appropriate, anti-resorptive medications that have been shown to significantly reduce fracture risk.

If you are postmenopausal, over 50, or have any of the risk factors above, we recommend a bone health assessment. Protecting your bones now can prevent a fracture that changes your life later.
